POPRAD |

|
|
| |
| POPRAD is an unprepossessing town on the plain. With its great
swathe of off-white high-rise housing encircling a small old centre, it
is best viewed as a stop-over on the way to the mountains proper.
Unbeautiful but practical hotels include the towering Hotel Garni at
Karpatska 11 námestie (tel 092/7763 877; under £5/$8-£10/$16) and the
boxy Domov Mladeze , by the train station (tel 092/7763 414; under
£5/$8) - you're probably better off at one of the not much more
expensive, but a lot more comfortable hotels in the mountains. The
excellent tourist office at nám. sv Egídia 2950/114 (Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm,
Sat 9am-1pm; tel 092/772 1700, www.tatradata.sk ), five minutes' walk
south of the train station, can book you into private rooms in the
Tatras. The office is just opposite the Domenico café , which offers a
good range of cakes. |
